MTSS tells you to sort students into tiers. It doesn't tell you how to know who belongs where — or when they move. Daily check-ins do.
Every school running MTSS knows the drill. Tier 1: good instruction and school-wide supports for everyone. Tier 2: targeted small-group help for some. Tier 3: intensive individual intervention for a few. Clean on paper. Messy in practice — because the hardest part isn't the tiers, it's the sorting.
Most schools sort tiers with referrals, grades, and behavior incidents. That's lagging data. By the time a student shows up in Tier 3, they've been struggling for months. And students move between tiers all the time — a kid who's Tier 1 in October can need Tier 2 by December. Static lists can't keep up with moving kids.
A 30-second daily check-in gives you a living signal. The student who's been "overwhelmed" five days straight surfaces before the referral gets written. The kid who went quiet — stopped checking in altogether — surfaces too, and going quiet is one of the loudest signals there is.
Counselors start the day with a sorted view: who needs you today, ranked by urgency. Tier 2 and Tier 3 stop being a spreadsheet exercise and start being a morning routine.
Here's what gets missed: MTSS is a delivery framework, not a curriculum. The tiers tell you how much support a student gets. SEL is what the support actually teaches — naming emotions, managing reactions, making better decisions under pressure.
When a student checks in with a difficult emotion, they don't just get flagged. They get one small practice matched to that feeling. Tier 1 students build capacity daily. Tier 2 and 3 students get the same practice plus the counselor's attention. Same system, different dosage — which is exactly how MTSS is supposed to work.
If your MTSS tiers are built on referrals and gut feel, you're sorting with yesterday's data. Daily check-ins give you today's. The tiers get smarter, the counselors get faster, and fewer kids have to fall far enough to be noticed.
See tiers that sort themselves.
